Justice League Meeting Thursday, October 7

Want to get more involved with the activities of the Justice League? Zoom in to the regular monthly meeting this Thursday at 7:15 pm to join the conversation. No commitment-just a warm welcome! To get the meeting link, email Mary Frances Bruce (maryfbruce@yahoo.com). If you’re already on the JL mailing list, you’ll get the Zoom link as usual before the meeting.

Blessing of the Animals
Saturday, October 2 at 1:00 pm

Come to St. George’s Saturday afternoon for the animal blessing.  This year, we will hold this ceremony outside in front of the church at 1:00 pm.  Bring a lawn chair; we will also have some chairs on hand if you cannot.  All of our four-legged friends are welcome to be there in the flesh, or you may bring a photo or object as a stand-in if your critter doesn’t like to travel. We will also remember animals who are with us no longer yet hold a special place in our memories.

Warm Nights Homeless Shelter Lunch Making

Saturday, October 16 (9 am – 10:15 am) is the next monthly date to make lunches for program guests. This is a great opportunity to help out our community! In addition to sandwich makers, we can use donations of 16 oz. bottles of water. We will make 200 sandwiches, and each lunch includes water, fruit, and a snack. Contact Peggy Alexander (peggyalexander28@gmail.com) or Mary Frances Bruce (maryfbruce@yahoo.com) or sign up here:

All Saints Day Service of Remembrance

St. George’s will celebrate an All Saints Day Service of Remembrance on November 1 (time and mode details to follow) for those buried in the church cemetery and those who have died for whom you would like prayers. You can submit the names via email (office@stgeo.comcastbiz.net) with “All Saints Day prayer intentions” in the subject line or by completing the form found on the credenza. The deadline for submitting names is the end of the day Monday October 25.

Hospitality Volunteers Needed

Do you enjoy planning for when your friends get together? If hospitality is one of your gifts, your community needs you! Each Sunday following the 10 am service we gather outside in front of the church (weather permitting) for fellowship as companions on the journey. We are seeking volunteers to provide individual snacks, juices, and soft drinks, as well as set up and clean up. If you feel a call to help (even just once) please contact Ames Perry (amesperry@gmail.com).

EDOW Service for
Bishop Chilton

All are invited to gather at the Washington National Cathedral in person or via live stream at 5:30 pm this Wednesday, September 29 (coincidentally her 75th birthday!) for a fond and grateful farewell to our beloved assisting Bishop, the Rt. Rev. Chilton Knudsen. Celebrating the many gifts she has shared with us, prayers of commissioning and blessing will be offered for her new call as assisting bishop in the Diocese of Chicago. If you’d like to write a note to Bishop Chilton, it may be emailed to Amanda Anderson (aanderson@edow.org) or mailed to Amanda’s attention at Episcopal Church House, Mount Saint Alban, Washington, DC 20016-5094, to be included in an engraved memory box.

Book Study Monday September 27
Join our continuing book study as we focus on Paul’s Second Letter to Timothy using a book entitled The Heart of a Leader: Saint Paul as Mentor, Model and Encourager by Edward S. Little.  The seven class sessions are held via Zoom on the second and fourth Mondays through December 13 at 7 pm. Please contact Terry Doyle terrencedoyle@msn.com to receive a copy of the book.

Animal Blessing Saturday, October 2

The tradition of blessing the animals at St. George's is alive and well!  You are invited to bring your animal companion for a brief outdoor service of celebration and blessing on Saturday, October 2, at 1:00 pm.

Celebrate St. Francis Sunday, October 3

On Sunday, October 3 the worship service is centered on St. Francis, whose feast day is October 4.  This year we go beyond the blessing of the animals (that service is Saturday Oct. 2; see announcement above) and focus in on St. Francis not just as a lover of creation, but as a radical follower of Jesus.  Join us October 3rd at 8 and 10 am for this special service with guest preacher John Rebstock, himself a Third Order Franciscan.

Welcome to Our New Interim Office Administrator Kathleen

We are pleased to share the news that we have an office administrator, Kathleen Haley who begins officially on Monday August 30.  Her hours will be Monday-Thursday 9:30-2:30.  If you have occasion to call or email the office in upcoming weeks please help welcome Kathleen to St. George's.

Labor Day Parade this Monday, September 6

If you'd like to join St. Georges and walk in the Labor Day Parade, come find us Monday morning between 9 and 9:45 am on Crescent Road near Buddy Attick Park. Dress in your St. George's T-shirt if you have one or other bright and comfortable clothing. There are no giveaways this year but we still need folks to carry our banner and to show the community who we are by participating. We are still in need of a vehicle to carry folks who may not be able to walk the entire route. If you have any additional questions or can offer help, please contact Michael Mangiapane at theblackdog@gmail.com.

In-Person Hospitality

In person hospitality is being held outdoors-outside the front of the church. We could use a volunteer for September 5 after the 10 am service. It looks like we are fine for snacks and drinks and just need someone to set up and clean up. If you can volunteer please let Ames Perry know at amesperry@gmail.com.  Thanks. Reminder: This will occur weather permitting.

School Supplies Drive

We are currently conducting our annual school supplies drive for Gaywood Elementary School and have asked that St Georgians purchase a backpack and fill it with specific supplies based on lists by grade provided by Gaywood. This year’s lists are longer and more specific than last year’s, and while we hope many of you will choose to fill a backpack for a student in a specific grade, we understand this may present a challenge for some parishioners. If you'd like to support the supplies drive but can't fill a backpack, please feel free to purchase and donate what you can; here is a general list of items that all or most grades require to guide you. If you fill a backpack for a specific grade, please be sure to label the backpack as to what grade it's intended for. School starts September 8 and we'd like to deliver the backpacks before then, so filled backpacks should be dropped off at St George’s as soon as possible, but no later than Sunday, September 5; you can also contact Donna Haselton at dlhaselton@msn.com to make other arrangements. Thank you for supporting the students and families of Gaywood!

Book Study: Begins September 13

Join our book study beginning September 13 as we focus on Paul’s Second Letter to Timothy.  We will use a book entitled The Heart of a Leader: Saint Paul as Mentor, Model and Encourager by Edward S. Little.  We will hold seven class sessions on Zoom on the second and fourth Tuesdays at 7 pm.  Please contact Terry Doyle terrencedoyle@msn.com to receive a copy of the book.

LEMs Announcement

The Lay Eucharistic Ministry (LEMs) at St. George’s  needs a few more volunteers. The LEMs read the Prayers of the People during the 10am service and stand at the cup station during Communion and say “Blood of Christ, Cup of Salvation” to people as they take the Blood of Christ. This is an important ministry in the parish ad we would love for others to get involved. If you can help or have questions, please contact Helen Rowe at clayknit@gmail.com
