Welcome to Our New Interim Office Administrator Kathleen

We are pleased to share the news that we have an office administrator, Kathleen Haley who begins officially on Monday August 30.  Her hours will be Monday-Thursday 9:30-2:30.  If you have occasion to call or email the office in upcoming weeks please help welcome Kathleen to St. George's.

Labor Day Parade this Monday, September 6

If you'd like to join St. Georges and walk in the Labor Day Parade, come find us Monday morning between 9 and 9:45 am on Crescent Road near Buddy Attick Park. Dress in your St. George's T-shirt if you have one or other bright and comfortable clothing. There are no giveaways this year but we still need folks to carry our banner and to show the community who we are by participating. We are still in need of a vehicle to carry folks who may not be able to walk the entire route. If you have any additional questions or can offer help, please contact Michael Mangiapane at theblackdog@gmail.com.

In-Person Hospitality

In person hospitality is being held outdoors-outside the front of the church. We could use a volunteer for September 5 after the 10 am service. It looks like we are fine for snacks and drinks and just need someone to set up and clean up. If you can volunteer please let Ames Perry know at amesperry@gmail.com.  Thanks. Reminder: This will occur weather permitting.

Disaster relief and assistance: Haiti Earthquake, Afghanistan, and Hurricane Ida

Episcopal Relief & Development is responding with direct assistance to vulnerable households in Haiti following the recent devastating earthquake, as well as working with the Diocese of Louisiana in response to Hurricane Ida. Gifts of any amount will help alleviate suffering. Please visit episcopalrelief.org/haiti-relief or episcopalrelief.org/hurricane-relief to make a donation as your circumstances allow. To assist with resettlement in our area of refugees from Afghanistan, Lutheran Social Services of the National Capital Area offers multiple ways to assist. Visit the LSS website at www.lssnca.org to donate much-needed financial or in-kind support, or to volunteer.

School Supplies Drive

We are currently conducting our annual school supplies drive for Gaywood Elementary School and have asked that St Georgians purchase a backpack and fill it with specific supplies based on lists by grade provided by Gaywood. This year’s lists are longer and more specific than last year’s, and while we hope many of you will choose to fill a backpack for a student in a specific grade, we understand this may present a challenge for some parishioners. If you'd like to support the supplies drive but can't fill a backpack, please feel free to purchase and donate what you can; here is a general list of items that all or most grades require to guide you. If you fill a backpack for a specific grade, please be sure to label the backpack as to what grade it's intended for. School starts September 8 and we'd like to deliver the backpacks before then, so filled backpacks should be dropped off at St George’s as soon as possible, but no later than Sunday, September 5; you can also contact Donna Haselton at dlhaselton@msn.com to make other arrangements. Thank you for supporting the students and families of Gaywood!

Book Study: Begins September 13

Join our book study beginning September 13 as we focus on Paul’s Second Letter to Timothy.  We will use a book entitled The Heart of a Leader: Saint Paul as Mentor, Model and Encourager by Edward S. Little.  We will hold seven class sessions on Zoom on the second and fourth Tuesdays at 7 pm.  Please contact Terry Doyle terrencedoyle@msn.com to receive a copy of the book.

LEMs Announcement

The Lay Eucharistic Ministry (LEMs) at St. George’s  needs a few more volunteers. The LEMs read the Prayers of the People during the 10am service and stand at the cup station during Communion and say “Blood of Christ, Cup of Salvation” to people as they take the Blood of Christ. This is an important ministry in the parish ad we would love for others to get involved. If you can help or have questions, please contact Helen Rowe at clayknit@gmail.com
