Opportunity to Feed Campers at Warm Night Summer Camp!
One of our former beloved parishioners, Peta Cappello, left a bequest in her will for the Warm Nights homeless shelter. Warm Nights is hosting a Summer Camp and needs lunches, so we have told the folks there that St. George’s will provide lunches for the weeks of July 28 and August 4. This involves making lunches for 35 campers for 4 days each week. Volunteer to make 70 sandwiches on any of these dates: Sunday, July 27; Tuesday, July 29; Sunday, August 3; Tuesday, August 5. Donate multipacks of salty snacks or cookies and cases of water (we will need 140 servings of these each week). Sign up sheets are in the narthex. Food donations can be brought in anytime. Gaywood Uniform Drive We are again holding a uniform drive to assist students at Gaywood Elementary School. There are families for whom Gaywood's mandatory uniform policy may present a financial challenge, which is where St. George’s can help. To assist, we are holding a uniform drive from now until August 17 asking for donations of the following items: Polo shirts, short or long-sleeve, in light blue, white, or navy blue (solid color); Jumpers, skirts, skorts in navy blue (solid); Sweaters in any color (solid); Pants, basic "chino" style, and shorts in navy blue; Socks in white, black, or navy blue (solid). Sizes XS to XL (Students are pre-K to 5th grade). The full Gaywood uniform policy is HERE. Where to buy: Uniforms are available at many retailers, in store and/or online, including Target, The Children’s Place, Amazon, Kohl’s, JCPenney, Macy’s, Walmart, and Lands’ End. Some popular uniform brands are Cat & Jack (at Target), The Children’s Place (at The Children’s Place and on Amazon), and French Toast. Donations should be dropped off at St George's by Sunday, August 17 so we can deliver them to Gaywood before school starts on August 26; you can also contact Donna Haselton to make other arrangements or if you have questions. Thank you for supporting the students and families of Gaywood! Praying the Psalms The focus for our adult spiritual formation program for this summer (June 1 to July 31) is Praying the Psalms. There are two ways of participating: on a daily basis with listings of psalms provided by Forward Movement and its Good Book Club; and/or by taking part in a series of workshops that will highlight various modalities for praying the psalms. Sign up for the program HERE. Also there are stand-alone workshops offered: Local Labyrinth Weekend! This Friday, July 11, drop by between 5:30-7:30 pm at the Bowie Senior Center (14900 Health Center Dr, Bowie, MD 20716). St. Georgians of all ages are invited to spend a few minutes praying with the Psalms while walking the outdoor labyrinth (or tracing hand-held versions). Instructions will be provided and no cost to attend. This Saturday July 12, 9:30 am at Brookside Gardens (1800 Glenallan Ave, Wheaton, MD 20902, no cost to enter). Those interested in carpooling may meet at St. George’s at 8:45 am. We will convene at the Japanese garden labyrinth for a short introduction and activity to prepare to pray a psalm using labyrinths. Then we’ll have time to walk the labyrinth or use a hand-held version while praying and enjoying the contemplative gardens. RAIN DATES: In the event of thunderstorms, we will post information on the St. Georges Facebook page and send an email, postponing the labyrinth events to the same times on the following weekend, Friday, July 18 and Saturday, July 19. You may also email Jocelyn HERE in case of doubt. • Monday, July 21 at St. George’s for Praying the Psalms with Postures to Pray with Body, Heart and Soul. We will explore a range of types of gestures and postures. If you have questions, please feel free to reach out to Connie, Karen Horrocks, Jocelyn Tidwell, or Terry Doyle. |
